Week #7

This week

This week, the focus of the development was on polishing the project based on feedback received from the alpha presentation and playtesting. The main concerns that were addressed this week were adjustments to the ambiance of the level to increase immersion, methods to communicate to the player when the start and goal points of the enemy's path has changed for new waves, and variations to the gameplay loop to add more interesting elements to keep the player engaged.

Dev

In response to the feedback received from the alpha presentation, the following adjustments were made:

  • Customized new textures for the buildings in the first level environment
  • Created a blinking visual effect for the start and goal points to better convey to the player when the start and goal points will change for greater gameplay flexibility
  • Added a new item to give the player a power boost that destroys enemies when the player collides with them to increase the variability between game loops and continue to add flavor to the game
  • Implemented a tweening library to easily make tweening animations within gamescripts with customizable easing functions from a populated easing function library in order to make future production of visual effects for the UI and other game objects quicker and smoother to implement, with dynamically adjustable parameters to test in runtime
  • Clouds that repeatedly slowly drift across the sky to cast shadows over the environment have been implemented to leverage the ambiance of the game and increase player immersion for a better experience

Features

A new power up has been added to the inventory system in addition to the previously added construction site!

This power up will allow the player to grow large for a set period of time, giving the player the ability to destroy enemy AI cars upon collision instead of crashing and losing the game.

What's Next

More feedback will be gathered to better inform design decisions and the development of the game. Currently, tutorial UI is in the workings to better communicate the goals and mechanics of the game to the player for a greater learning experience.
